General Summary

Duty First Consulting is currently seeking a communications-focused technical editor and proofreader to join our company, who will work closely with our federal healthcare operations team. DFC's team members have experience in public policy, health communications, public health, and technical writing and editing. Our clients are primarily agencies and departments of the federal government.

Essential Duties

Responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:

  • Editing both digital and printed materials, including website content, user guides, reports, proposals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and presentations
  • Working directly with the client to update and maintain a style guide used across federal government programs
  • Ensuring all content follows editorial style guidelines set by the client
  • Reviewing and proofreading client deliverables for correct formatting, punctuation, grammar, and spelling, and ensuring all deliverables are submitted error-free and on time
  • Revising technical documents to use plain language for external audiences
  • Working closely with other team members to develop webinar presentations, SOPs, and website content that adhere to the program style guide
  • Supporting ad hoc communications activities such as developing marketing collateral and surveys, conducting focus groups and interviews, and/or creating social media content
  • Generating content and creative ideas for reaching and engaging target audiences and communicating key messages

Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent writing and copyediting skills
  • Expertise in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation, including exceptions and best practices
  • Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style and AP Style preferred
  • Experience writing and editing technical documents, SOPs, and proposals preferred
  • Strong oral communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal skills; able to work in team setting or independently
  • Comfortable providing feedback and raising concerns
  • Able to manage competing priorities and deliver on multiple projects/priorities simultaneously
  • Strong work ethic with a commitment to client service excellence
  • Has the legal right to work in the US for any employer; sponsorship is not available for this position
  • Able to obtain a US government security clearance, if needed
  • Preference will be given to qualified Veteran candidates

 Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in English, journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or related field
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of professional experience, specifically in federal consulting, communications, journalism, and/or publishing
